Support for Microsoft Windows XP is ending on April 8, 2014

As of April 8, 2014, Microsoft will no longer be providing supports for the Windows XP operating system. XP originally came out in 2001 and has proven to be a favorite of many PC users, current accounting for 35-40% of all operating systems.

Why this is important information?

This information is important as unsupported version of Windows will no longer receive software updates from Windows Update. These include security updates that can help protect your PC from harmful viruses, spyware, and other malicious software, which can steal your personal information. Windows Update also installs the latest software updates to improve the reliability of Windows—new drivers for your hardware and more. Microsoft has issued statements that using XP after April 2014 is an ‘at your own risk’ situation for any customers choosing not to migrate to a new operating system.

What should you be doing and how soon?

Many PC users will likely continue to use XP past April 2014 and may not experience any serious issues. At the same time it is likely that the amount of spyware and malware produced will increase to take advantage of those who fail to act. Eventually those who fail to switch away from XP will suffer data or identity loss.

At Quicktech we are recommending that our clients take preventative steps prior to March 2014. The Quicktech team is aware of which operating systems are being used by our corporate clients and how best to protect these computers. Where we have less insight is into the operating systems that our clients use on their home computers. Vulnerabilities of personal information and the transfer of harmful viruses through shared files is likely as these computers will not receive regular security updates,
